Tensions mount in Kassena-Nankana over rejected MCE nominee

The outcome of the confirmation has prompted sharp criticism from within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Navrongo, with supporters calling for the revocation of the appointment of 15 Assembly members.

Political tensions are escalating in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality following the failed confirmation of Faustina Akeyom Abulu as Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

The vote, conducted by the Municipal Electoral Commission on Tuesday April 29, saw only 14 out of 50 members supporting the nominee— a score far below the two-thirds threshold of 35 votes required for confirmation.

The outcome has prompted sharp criticism from within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Navrongo, particularly from Teddy John Kwolaga Addah, a member of the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Assembly and part of the NDC Majority Caucus.

In a strongly worded letter to party leadership, Addah expressed “profound disappointment and concern” over the result and called for swift action to address what he described as a betrayal of party unity.

“It appears that some government appointees and elected members prioritized their personal interests over the party’s collective interests,” Addah stated, pointing to the caucus’s 15 government appointees and a significant number of elected NDC members who failed to support the nominee.

He further called on party leadership to revoke the appointments of the 15 government appointees, accusing them of failing to demonstrate loyalty to the party and its leadership.

Despite the failed confirmation, Addah reaffirmed his support for Faustina Akeyom Abulu, describing her as a candidate with strong leadership qualities and a commitment to the development of the municipality.

He urged the President and party leadership to renominate her, calling it “a step in the right direction towards promoting unity and development.”

The controversy comes at a sensitive time for the NDC in the Navrongo Central Constituency, as the party seeks to consolidate its base and prepare for upcoming elections. Addah concluded his letter by urging the party to “closely monitor the constituency and take necessary steps to prevent any actions that may undermine the party’s unity and popularity.”

Regional leadership of the governing NDC have yet to comment on the outcome of the failed confirmation of Faustina Akeyom Abulu, and it remains unclear whether she will be renominated or if new candidates will be considered by the Presidency.
