Government allocates GHS25 Million to MMDAs for local economic dev’t

Dr. Forson outlined the government’s commitment to strengthening local governance by ensuring that a significant portion of the national budget reaches grassroots administrations.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has announced that every District Assembly in Ghana will receive a minimum allocation of GH¢25 million in 2025 to enhance local economic development and decentralisation efforts.

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, June 3, Dr. Forson outlined the government’s commitment to strengthening local governance by ensuring that a significant portion of the national budget reaches grassroots administrations.

He emphasized that approximately GH¢6.1 billion of the total GH¢7.57 billion earmarked for 2025 would be directly channeled to district assemblies to stimulate economic activities at the local level.

“Mr. Speaker, every District Assembly will receive at least GH¢25 million this year,” Dr. Forson stated. “Beyond disbursing funds, the government is implementing measures to ensure these resources are utilized effectively to achieve our broader economic goals.”

The announcement follows criticisms from the Minority, who have accused the Finance Minister of delaying the release of essential funds to key institutions, despite legal requirements and the availability of resources.

This initiative is expected to promote inclusive economic growth, reinforce decentralisation, and support the Mahama administration’s strategy to revive the economy from the grassroots level.
