Upper East PURC warns residents against tampering with utility meters
Regional Public Relations Officer of the PURC, Mohammed Adam Sulaiman, reminded the public that utility meters remain the exclusive property of the service providers and must not be altered, manipulated, or interfered with under any circumstances.
The Upper East Regional Office of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has issued a stern warning to residents in the region to desist from tampering with electricity and water meters provided by utility service providers.
Speaking on Utility Hour, a weekly program on Mike FM on Thursday July 31, Regional Public Relations Officer of the PURC, Mohammed Adam Sulaiman, reminded the public that utility meters remain the exclusive property of the service providers and must not be altered, manipulated, or interfered with under any circumstances.
“Meters continuously remain the property of the service provider; under no circumstance should you ever touch it.” Sulaiman stated.
The PURC official also highlighted the growing concerns about meter tampering in some communities, which he described as a major challenge to efficient service delivery and revenue mobilisation for utility companies.
Addressing the issue of disconnections, Sulaiman made it clear that service providers are legally permitted to disconnect a customer’s utility service if payments are not made in time.
“After having given you their bill after 14 days, if you don’t settle it they have the right to disconnect, but even after 14 days, they will give a written notice to you that you owe us and 14 days have elapsed so we are coming to disconnect you within the next three days.” He said.
He urged consumers to honour their financial obligations to utility providers promptly to avoid service interruptions and the inconvenience of reconnection fees.
