The Upper East Regional Taekwondo Team has returned home triumphantly and lifted the name of the region high after winning five medals at the just-ended 15th Korean Ambassador Cup, held at the Botenma Sports Complex in Accra from August 21 to 22, 2025.
The regional team, made up of eight athletes, including one female and seven males, and two coaches, represented the Upper East Region with determination and pride. Their strong performance earned them two gold medals, one silver, and two bronze medals, an improvement on last year’s tally of three medals.
The prestigious tournament brought together regional teams from across the country to compete in various categories, with the goal of nurturing young talents and promoting taekwondo as a growing sport in Ghana.
Below are detail’s of the team’s performance;
- Senior Category
Abdul-Karim Hanan Danibu (-68kg) won his first bout but was eliminated in his second match, falling short of the medal bracket.
Akurigo Bashiru Awindoo (-80kg) lost his opening match and did not advance.
- Junior Category (Under 63kg)
Patience Ali Chakoja, the only female athlete on the team and a second-year student of Bolgatanga Girls’ Senior High School, emerged as a standout performer. She won gold in the Poomsae competition and bronze in the Kyorugi (sparring) category after defeating three opponents.
- Cadets (10–14 years)
Owusu Ferguson Corsah dominated the Poomsae division, claiming gold among more than 16 competitors. He added a silver in the Kyorugi under-45kg category, showcasing versatility and talent.
Abdul Haqq Timmi, a student of Great Victory Academy, secured a bronze medal in Poomsae.

Though three athletes—Obed Batuure Yeli-Ahig (Dream School), Abdul Ghaffar Tetera (Great Victory Academy), and Lord Nsobila (Golden Step International School)—did not win medals, their performances were commendable and contributed to the team spirit.
Notably, only Abdul-Karim Hanan Danibu had previous experience at the Ambassador Cup. For the remaining seven athletes, this was their debut at the national level, a fact that makes the team’s success even more impressive.
