Girl child officer urges collective responsibility in child upbringing

A Girl child officer and educationist, Sylvia Wecheng, has called on society to join hands in raising children to become responsible adults.
Speaking on Voices of Change on Mike FM on Saturday, August 30, 2025, Wecheng stressed that parenting in the 21st century has become increasingly complex and can no longer be seen as the sole responsibility of parents.
“Raising a child is no longer a one-man job. It takes the collective effort of the family, community, religious leaders, schools, and society at large to bring up a well-rounded individual,” she stated.
Wecheng explained that while parents are expected to provide the basic necessities such as food, clothing, and shelter, they must also play an active role in nurturing their children morally, emotionally, and culturally to help them fit into society.
She advised that parents be both firm and flexible when setting boundaries, recommending that children be involved in the boundary-setting process.
“When children are part of the conversation, they are more likely to respect the limits set.” She said.
Addressing the issue of working parents who leave their children in the care of others, Wecheng urged them to cultivate strong relationships with caregivers and to make unannounced visits to schools and children’s homes to monitor the welfare of their children.
On the subject of boarding schools, she expressed concern about children being sent away too early.
Wecheng also encouraged parents to make deliberate efforts to teach their children native languages, even if both parents speak different ones. She emphasized that children have the natural capacity to learn multiple languages simultaneously.
She further appealed to traditional leaders, religious bodies, political authorities, and educational institutions to take a more active role in child development.
