Movement for Change’s Solomon Owusu Blames NPP’s Akwatia defeat on lack of a message
Owusu criticised the NPP leadership and its candidate for failing to address the pressing needs of constituents, particularly the youth who make up a significant portion of the population.
A Senior Communications Team Member of the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, has attributed the New Patriotic Party’s defeat in the Akwatia By-Election to what he described as the party’s lack of a clear message to the electorate.
Speaking on TV3’s New Day program, monitored by Mike FM Owusu criticised the NPP leadership and its candidate for failing to address the pressing needs of constituents, particularly the youth who make up a significant portion of the population.
“First of all, they didn’t have any message. I listened to the candidate, the general secretary, the former flagbearer, and all the aspirants. None of them could come out with any tangible message for the people of Akwatia. Akwatia is predominantly youthful, educated, and what they are looking for is jobs. But there was no plan to that extent.”
He further stressed that instead of providing solutions to unemployment and development concerns, the party resorted to emotional appeals, which, in his view, did not resonate with the electorate.
“It was all about the funeral, funeral. Politicians must learn that Ghanaians have moved beyond this funeral rhetoric. What they want now is development—and that was my difficulty.”
The Akwatia by-election was held on September 2, 2025, following the death of the area’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi and the Electoral Commission’s certified results showed Bediako of the NDC securing 18,199 votes of the total valid votes cast making him the winner with his closest rival, Kwame Asumadu of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 15,235 votes.
