President Mahama urges attitudinal change to boost tourism sector

He urged Ghanaians to be more innovative, courteous, and committed in their interactions with tourists, emphasizing the importance of leaving a lasting and positive impression.

President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to adopt a more positive and service-oriented attitude to enhance the country’s tourism potential and improve visitor experiences.

Speaking at his Media Encounter, President Mahama expressed concern over what he described as a lack of professionalism and poor service delivery within the hospitality sector. He noted that while Ghana continues to attract thousands of tourists annually and enjoys a generally positive international reputation, feedback from visitors often highlights shortcomings in customer service.

“Ghana enjoys a good name, but there are feedbacks that are not good,” President Mahama said.

He urged Ghanaians to be more innovative, courteous, and committed in their interactions with tourists, emphasizing the importance of leaving a lasting and positive impression.

The President also revealed that government efforts to boost tourism infrastructure are well underway. He disclosed that plans to dualise key roads such as the Cape Coast–Takoradi road, leading to major tourist destinations are at an advanced stage, a move he said would ease travel and open up remote areas for tourism investment.

The government, he assured, remains committed to positioning tourism as a key pillar of Ghana’s economic development strategy, creating jobs and generating revenue for national growth.
