The Kassena Nankana West District Health Directorate has commissioned a newly constructed children’s ward at the Kassena Nankana East Health Centre in Bembisi.
The facility, which was inaugurated on Wednesday, September 17, is expected to boost pediatric health delivery in the area while reducing pressure on the main district hospital.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the District Director of Health, Lawal Alhassan, explained that the project was part of the Ghana Health Service’s “network of practice” initiative introduced in 2024 and seeks to build the capacities of sub-district health centers to handle specific cases that would otherwise burden district hospitals.
“Somewhere last year, Ghana Health Service instituted what we call the network of practice, and the idea was to ensure that we build the capacities of our sub-districts to be able to handle certain cases so that the district hospital will not be choked. We were to start with two centers, the Kasena Nankana East Health Center and the Chaina Health Centre.” He said.
Alhassan disclosed that the newly constructed 10-bed ward was built through internally generated resources, following efforts to block revenue leakages within the health center.
“When we started this initiative, we tried to replicate it in other facilities but it failed. Here, with the support of management and staff, we mobilized funds internally, and today I am happy to say that this structure you are seeing was completed in less than a year with little resources.” He stated.
The Health Director commended the management and staff of the Kassena Nankana East Health Center for their dedication, as well as community members for their active interest in the facility’s operations.
He further assured that the District Health Directorate would continue to provide support to help address some of the challenges facing the center.
