NPP Communicator defends Ofori-Atta, rejects claims he is evading accountability

Adams said Ofori-Atta’s decision to seek medical treatment outside the country was lawful and should not be misconstrued as an attempt to flee justice.

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team for the Navrongo Central Constituency, Francis Xavier Adams, has defended former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, dismissing claims that he travelled abroad to evade accountability.

Adams said Ofori-Atta’s decision to seek medical treatment outside the country was lawful and should not be misconstrued as an attempt to flee justice.

He was reacting to reports of an extradition request made by the Attorney-General to the United States in connection with the Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) scandal.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Friday, December 19, Adams insisted that the former finance minister followed due process before leaving Ghana.

“Ken Ofori-Atta did not sneak out of this country. He followed due process and formally notified the appropriate authorities of his intention to travel abroad for medical attention,” he said. “It was a lawful request. If you are sick, you do not determine when you will become well, and that is the situation he finds himself in.”

Adams accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of politicising the matter and seeking public sympathy through the media, rather than allowing due process to take its course.

According to him, the NPP remains committed to accountability and is prepared to make its former officials available to answer questions regarding their stewardship in office.

“The NDC has adopted a style of public prosecution and media trial to court sympathy, and that does not help matters. Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has made it clear that all his appointees are ready to account for their actions. Nobody in the NPP fears the law.”

Adams further noted that Ofori-Atta’s legal team has indicated their willingness to cooperate fully with investigations, despite his current health challenges.

“His lawyers have said he is ready to cooperate with investigations, even to answer questions remotely due to his ill health,” he said. “Does that mean he is running away from accountability? Certainly not.”
