The Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has directed the Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to ban all tribal groupings in second-cycle institutions across the region.
Speaking during a media engagement with journalists in the region on Wednesday, January 21, the minister bemoaned the growing incidence of student riots in senior high and technical schools in the region.
“We have discouraged the organisation of tribal groups because, most of the time, these riots take tribal dimensions. We have therefore asked the directorate to ban all tribal groups in the schools.”
The minister noted that tribal groupings breed division and have been identified as a key contributor to student unrest in schools.
“The purpose of a boarding school is integration. If we encourage tribal groupings in schools, it will defeat the purpose for which boarding schools were established.” He added.
Atanga also attributed the riots to a breakdown of discipline among teachers, non-teaching staff, and students.
“My understanding of these riots is that they are not usually about the students alone; rather, they stem from a breakdown of discipline, even among teaching and non-teaching staff.” He said.
He therefore called for the maintenance of discipline and peaceful coexistence among both teaching and non-teaching staff in schools across the region.
