90% voter turnout recorded in Upper East NPP Presidential Primaries – Regional Chairman
Namoo said that although the turnout was commendable, the remaining 10 per cent shortfall was significant and should not be overlooked.
The Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Anthony Namoo, has disclosed that the region recorded a 90 per cent voter turnout during the party’s presidential primaries held on January 31.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Monday, February 2, Namoo said that although the turnout was commendable, the remaining 10 per cent shortfall was significant and should not be overlooked.
“In the region, the voter turnout was 90 per cent, but for me, the 10 per cent is quite huge and should not have been the case. We needed more people than what we saw.” He noted.
He attributed the deficit partly to security concerns and other logistical challenges that affected some delegates’ ability to participate in the process.
Touching on lessons learnt and the way forward for future internal and national elections, Namoo called for increased use of technology and the full implementation of certain electoral provisions
“In the future, the proxy system allowed in national elections should not be dispensed with simply because some candidates are uncomfortable with it.”
“Technology should also be introduced so that delegates across the world can vote. If I am a delegate in Navrongo Central and on election day I am in Canada, I should be able to cast my vote online.” He said.
Namoo used the opportunity to commend party delegates and executives at the constituency, regional, and national levels for their roles in ensuring a peaceful and incident-free election in the Upper East Region.
