Assembly Members in Kassena Nankana raise alarm over rising road accidents, call for collective action

Jacob Wekea Awelaga Kolwefera, Assembly Member for the Pungu Central Electoral Area, said the persistent road crashes continue to rob society of valuable human resources while leaving families devastated

Some Assembly members in the Kassena Nankana Municipality have expressed deep concern over the increasing loss of lives, particularly among the youth, through road accidents, and are calling for urgent collective action to address the situation.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Thursday, March 12, Jacob Wekea Awelaga Kolwefera, Assembly Member for the Pungu Central Electoral Area, said the persistent road crashes continue to rob society of valuable human resources while leaving families devastated

“It is the next generation that holds the future of the world. The youth of today are tomorrow’s leaders, and when they lose their lives at a time they should be contributing positively to development, it becomes very painful. That is why we must all be concerned.” He said.

Kolwefera noted that the Pungu community has recently lost several industrious young people through road accidents, individuals who played important roles in supporting their families and contributing to community development.

He stressed the need for stronger community involvement in promoting road safety.

“Through collaboration among all stakeholders, communities can identify individuals who ride or drive carelessly and caution them. If they continue with such behaviours, they should be sanctioned. Citizen vigilance is key to reducing indiscipline on our roads from the community level.” He added.

Also speaking on the show, Gregory Ajegeba Wedaga, Assembly Member for the Nimbasenia Electoral Area in Pungu, said addressing road accidents requires a collective approach involving authorities and community members.

“This issue is a concern for everyone in the Kasena Nankana area. Deaths and injuries occur every time on our roads, and that is why we must all become ambassadors of this advocacy. We should implement complementary measures to support what the Municipal Assembly is already doing.” He stated.

Wedaga advocated for the installation of speed ramps in accident-prone areas and urged drivers to avoid the wrongful parking of long vehicles along roadsides, which he said contributes to accidents.

He further called for stricter enforcement of local by-laws and stronger action against illicit drug use and alcohol abuse, which he described as major contributors to road crashes.

“Chiefs, elders, and other community members must come together to champion this cause,” he said.

The Assembly Members also appealed to authorities to improve the condition of roads in the municipality, while advising the general public, especially the youth, to exercise caution when using the roads in order to protect and save lives.
