NPP Youth Organiser accuses NDC of deceptive politics over LGBTQ+ bill
His remarks follow comments by President John Dramani Mahama, who called for restraint and dialogue in the ongoing national debate, stating that the issue, while important, is not the country’s most pressing priority.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Youth Organiser for the Chiana-Paga Constituency, Kassim Mubashir Mandela, has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of engaging in what he describes as deceptive politics over LGBTQ+ rights in Ghana.
His remarks follow comments by President John Dramani Mahama, who called for restraint and dialogue in the ongoing national debate, stating that the issue, while important, is not the country’s most pressing priority.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Friday, April 3, 2026, Mandela alleged that the NDC has shifted its stance on the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.
He noted that the President, while in opposition, campaigned in support of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, criticizing the previous NPP administration for failing to sign it into law and promising that, as a committed Christian, he would ensure its passage.
“If you can remember, the president made several comments on air indicating that the former government didn’t want to assent to the bill because of the grants, loans, and foreign aid they were receiving. That, he said, was the very reason they refused to sign it. And then he came into office, promising that he would assent to it.”
“What has changed, Mr. President? This is not a political issue, but the President, in his own wisdom, has deceived Ghanaians.” He added.
Mandela said the governing party’s current posture contrasts sharply with its earlier position when it was in opposition. He further contended that the NDC government possesses the parliamentary strength to take decisive action if it genuinely intends to address the issue.
“Ghanaians gave you (NDC) the numbers for a reason. Religious leaders and traditional rulers gave you the mandate for a reason. You have the decisive majority in Parliament, which means you don’t even need the NPP to pass this bill.” Mandela said.
“When you introduce it as a President-owned bill, you don’t need the NPP in Parliament to pass it. And you have a President who was loud and clear, saying that yes, as a Christian, he is against this.”
He also called on religious and traditional leaders and groups to hold the President accountable for his promise to implement anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.
