Chuchuliga youth commission self-funded culvert, praise Mike FM for amplifying their cause

Residents of Chuchuliga in the Builsa North Municipality of the Upper East Region were filled with joy on Sunday July 26, as the community commissioned a self-funded culvert constructed through a youth-led initiative to restore access to farms and neighbouring communities.

The community also expressed profound appreciation to Mike FM, saying the station’s earlier coverage of the project attracted public attention and support during the three-week construction period.

Speaking on behalf of the Chief of Chuchuliga, Jonathan Asangalisah commended the youth for demonstrating what he described as “a good spirit” of community service, saying their commitment would inspire similar development initiatives in the future.

He explained that the collapsed crossing had made it difficult for schoolchildren to access their schools, while farmers and transport operators struggled to move produce to market.

According to him, the completion of the culvert will restore free movement, improve access to farmlands, and stimulate economic activities within the community.

The Assembly Member for the Azug-Yeri Electoral Area, Thompson Ayaba, recalled that the collapsed crossing had become a death trap for both motorists and pedestrians.

He said he had engaged the Builsa North Municipal Assembly on the issue but was informed that limited resources had been prioritised for the rehabilitation of schools damaged by storms before attention could be given to the road infrastructure.

Ayaba noted that the explanation did not discourage the youth, who chose to mobilise resources and undertake the project themselves rather than wait indefinitely for government intervention.

He disclosed that the Chuchuliga Development Support Group, together with natives living in Chuchuliga, Kumasi, other parts of Ghana and abroad, contributed funds towards the successful construction of the culvert.

He praised the determination and unity of the contributors, describing the commissioning as the successful elimination of a major hazard that had threatened the lives of residents and road users.

Speaking on behalf of the Chuchuliga Development Support Group, Dr. Joshua Amaami Akuu described the culvert as the group’s most significant self-funded project since its establishment.

He explained that although the group had collaborated with the Municipal Assembly and other organisations on previous development projects, this was the first major initiative it had conceived, financed and completed entirely through its own efforts.

Dr. Akuu said the completed culvert has reconnected farming communities and restored a vital transport link that supports agricultural production and local commerce.

He revealed that the idea for the project emerged from discussions within a community forum known as “Parliament,” where residents regularly deliberate on development challenges affecting Chuchuliga.

Dr. Akuu criticised what he described as the Municipal Assembly’s failure to urgently address the deteriorated crossing despite the danger it posed, saying the community was ultimately compelled to take responsibility for solving the problem.

As the Chuchuliga Development Support Group prepares to embark on more self-help development projects, it has appealed to individuals, corporate organisations and well-wishers to support its efforts financially.

The group has published its Mobile Money number, 0244165188, for members of the public who wish to contribute towards future community development initiatives.

The commissioning ceremony concluded with renewed calls for unity, volunteerism and sustained collaboration among residents, development partners and stakeholders to accelerate infrastructure development and improve livelihoods in Chuchuliga.
