Dual citizens shouldn’t serve in government – Asuliwono

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show, on Wednesday February 19, 2025, Asuliwono said such a law would impact negatively on good governance.

Comfort Asuliwono, a communications team member of the New Patriotic Party in the Chiana-Paga constituency, has kicked against calls for the passage of the Dual Citizenship Amendment Bill.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show, on Wednesday February 19, 2025, Asuliwono said such a law would impact negatively on good governance.

The Dual Citizenship Amendment Bill when passed is expected to remove restrictions on the current Dual Citizenship Law that prevents dual citizens from holding certain national offices.

One such proponent who has continuously appealed to Parliament to expedite the passage of the Bill’s is the Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson.

Commenting on the issue, Asuliwonno said she completely disagrees with a section of Ghanaians who have suggested that duals citizens be allowed to hold national positions.

“I say a big no to that because a rolling stone gathers no mass. You can’t use two eyes to look into a bottle. Opening our democratic doors that wide will be dangerous to the country’s progress”.

Asuliwonno, instead, proposed that the law prohibiting dual citizens be maintained and people who intend to hold national offices made to denounce their  dual citizenship.

“Probably they may not even put all their efforts here because they still have interest over there. And as and when they like, they leave.” She argued.
