E-levy was an avenue for NPP to loot – NDC
Danwadaani's statement comes in the wake of the abolishment of the e-levy by the Mahama administration.

Maurice Achana Danwadaani, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team in the Navrongo Central Constituency, has made a scathing accusation against the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Friday, April 3, 2025, Danwadaani alleged that the NPP used the electronic levy (E-levy) as a means to loot the country.
Danwadaani questioned the NPP government’s use of proceeds generated from the E-levy, suggesting that they intentionally assigned the funds to the consolidated funds to avoid accountability.
“They placed the money in the consolidated fund… so they can squander the money, and we can’t trace it. You said you want to use part of the e-levy to construct roads, when you get the money, you will not pay it into the road fund for the ministry of roads to use that and construct roads. So that the money can be traced, you would rather pay it into the consolidated fund where people cannot monitor how the money has been disbursed,”
“It was a clear avenue to loot the suffering people of the country” Danwadaani stated while applauding the Mahama administration for bringing relief to the ordinary Ghanaian through the abolishment of the electronic levy.
The E-levy, introduced in 2022 by the NPP government, was a 1.5% tax on electronic transactions, including mobile money transfers, bank transfers, and online payments. The tax was met with widespread criticism, with many arguing that it unfairly burdened low-income earners and people without access to traditional banking services.
Danwadaani’s accusations come on the heels of the Mahama administration’s decision to abolish the E-levy. The move has been widely welcomed by Ghanaians, who see it as a relief from the financial burden imposed by the tax.
