Originally initiated by the Catholic Church in Navrongo, the Easter picnic has evolved into a landmark social gathering that cuts across age, faith, and background.

Hundreds of revellers thronged Navrongo on Easter Monday to climax the 2025 Easter celebrations with the town’s beloved annual picnic under the mahogany trees — an event that has grown into a cultural spectacle attracting people from within and beyond the Kassena-Nankana Municipality.

Originally initiated by the Catholic Church in Navrongo, the Easter picnic has evolved into a landmark social gathering that cuts across age, faith, and background. The atmosphere on Monday was lively and festive, with residents and visitors mingling freely, sharing meals and drinks, dancing to music, and participating in a variety of games and competitions.

Outdoor games like ludo, draughts, and card games drew enthusiastic players, while dancing and singing contests kept the crowd entertained throughout the day. Attendees described the event as more than just a picnic, calling it a full-blown carnival, with major roads leading to the venue packed with heavy motor traffic.

“This has become a tradition we eagerly await every year,” said Akua Nabila, a local teacher. “It brings everyone together in a way no other event does.”

The event also presented a significant opportunity for local businesses. Food vendors, drink sellers, and artisans lined the streets, making brisk sales as the crowds grew throughout the day.

For many small and medium-sized enterprises, the Easter picnic is a much-anticipated peak sales period.
