Eid: Gov’t declares two days holiday in fulfilment of campaign promise

This year's Eid celebration coincides with Sunday, March 30, which falls on a weekend; the Interior Ministry has, however, declared that the following Monday be used for the holiday instead.

The Ministry of Interior has declared Monday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 1, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-ul-Fitr celebration.

This is according to a statement from the Ministry of Interior signed by the sector Minister, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, dated March 22, 2025.

This year’s Eid celebration coincides with Sunday, March 30, which falls on a weekend; the Interior Ministry has, however, declared that the following Monday be used for the holiday instead.

The statement from the Ministry also indicated that President John Dramani Mahama has, by Executive Instrument (EI), added another day for the celebration of Eid, which will be on Tuesday, April 1.

President Mahama, in the run-up to the 2024 general elections, promised to add an extra one-day holiday to Muslims a day after the celebration of Eid.

This announcement from the Interior Ministry is a fulfilment of the President’s promise to the Muslim community.

“However, in view of the fact that 30th March 2025 falls on a Sunday and in the interest of the public, His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, has by Executive Instrument (E.I.), in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601) declared Monday, 31st March 2025 and Tuesday, 1st April 2025 as additional Public Holidays and should be observed as such throughout the country.” Part of the statement reads.
