GACC urges citizens to report corruption; assures legal protection

Dorcas Affum Tenkorang, an Assistant Programmes Officer at the GACC, emphasized that citizens have a civic responsibility to help combat corruption, which continues to cripple the nation’s development.

The Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) has called on citizens to boldly report corruption-related cases to state institutions such as the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), assuring them of full legal protection under Ghanaian law.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Thursday, October 30, Dorcas Affum Tenkorang, an Assistant Programmes Officer at the GACC, emphasized that citizens have a civic responsibility to help combat corruption, which continues to cripple the nation’s development.

“Resist, reject, and report corruption. When you see something, say something,” she urged.

“Many people are afraid to report corruption because of what may happen afterwards, but we want to remind citizens that there are laws in place to protect them. The Witness Protection Act and the Whistleblower Act, for instance, shield individuals from threats or intimidation after they report wrongdoing.”

Tenkorang noted that corruption should not be perceived only as a high-profile political issue but also as a problem that manifests in everyday forms such as extortion, nepotism, abuse of discretion, conflict of interest, and embezzlement.

She stressed that the effects of corruption are felt deeply across communities, hindering access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities.

“Imagine funds meant for a six-classroom block in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality being diverted, leaving only a two-unit structure built, that deprives children of education,” she lamented.

“Why should people walk long distances to access healthcare when a clinic could have been built nearby? Or why do graduates remain unemployed despite government investments? Corruption robs us of progress, drains our economy, and denies us the development we deserve.”

Tenkorang therefore encouraged citizens to actively join the fight against corruption by reporting all suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
