GPHA renovates three teachers’ bungalows at Navrongo SHS

At a short ceremony held in one of the newly renovated bungalows on Thursday March 20, 2025 contractors of the project, Tonybeck Company Limited handed over the renovated projects to the school's authority.

Management of the Navrongo Senior High School (Navasco) in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality of the Upper East Region has received three renovated teachers bungalows funded by the Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority (GPHA), facilitated through an old student, Michael Achagwe Luguge.

At a short ceremony held in one of the newly renovated bungalows on Thursday March 20, 2025, the contractor of the project -Tonybeck Company Limited – handed over the renovated projects to the school’s management.

Mercy Babachuweh, Headmistress of the school, in her remarks expressed hearty gratitude to the Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority (GPHA) and its former Director-General and Nabia, Michael Achage Luguge.

“During our school’s Speech and Price Giving Day in November last year, we asked for support to renovate the teachers’ bungalows because it was in a bad state, later, Nabia Castro called to tell me a Senior Nabia named, Michael Luguge, wanted to help as so we should write officially to GPHA, we quickly did that and Nabia Micheal Luguge followed up and they came to renovate three of our bungalows.” She narrated

She added that another old student, Julius Awini, also supported the roofing of the projects in the interim, while they waited for funds from GPHA.

“They had taken off the roof, and the staff were virtually perching with others, so he [ Julius Awini ] quickly came in to personally support with the roofing while waiting for GPHA.” She added.

The Headmistress renovated bungalows will greatly improve effective teaching and learning towards achieving academic success.

Madam Babachuweh entreated the occupants of the renovated bungalows to adopt a culture of maintenance to ensure the sustainability of the bungalows.

“If you see any damage here try and work on it immediately, so let’s maintain this facility.” She advised.

She used the occasion to appeal for more support from stakeholders, including the government, non-government organisations, old students and the general public, noting that about ten more bungalows need urgent renovation as they are in bad condition.

” We still have about ten bungalows that are asbestos roofs in this school, as we are all aware asbestos are no longer healthy for habitation, so it is our appeal that government, NGOs, and other Nabia who are in a good positions should come and support us.” she appealed.

A bungalow which needs urgent renovation

On his part, the Chairman of the school’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA), Issah Bogobiri, thanked the sponsors of the renovation project, describing the support as a noble investment which will give the occupants comfort to enable them to deliver on their mandate as tutors.

“For us parents, it is a pleasure because the problem of the school is the housing of masters, we thank GPHA and the Nabia who works there, [ Michael Luguge].” he expressed.

Dobwh Philip, a teacher and occupant of one of the renovated bungalows, was full of joy and gratitude stating that the renovation has come as a relief for them.

“Previously when we see clouds gathering we start panicking, if it rains the whole night you have to stay all night to harvest water because of leaking roofs, the following morning you go to class and you are already stressed up,”

“This renovation is a great relief for us; we have been praying for this, I want to thank the headmistress and school management for going the extra mile to get help from people for us.” He expressed.

The site supervisor for the project, Sebastian Akadole, said the project was renovated in line with best construction practices to ensure its durability and comfort.

“The project work was undertaken to meet the required specifications; the maintenance included demolishing and alteration of structure, reinforcement of concrete works, plastering, plumbing, tiling of specific areas and restructuring of the boys quarters to a chamber and hall self-contained apartment.” He remarked

The Navrongo Senior High School is one of Ghana’s leading second-cycle institutions; since its establishment in September 1960, the school has produced some of Ghana’s best intellectuals both home and abroad.
