Kassena Nankana Municipality among four MMDAs in Upper East to benefit from Farmer Service Centers

He revealed that the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Assembly, the Builsa South District, the Bongo District, and the Garu District are among the four districts in the Upper East Region.

The Kassena-Nankana Municipal Assembly has been selected among four Municipal and District Assemblies in the Upper East Region to benefit from the government’s Farmer Service Centers initiative, which will provide 50 agriculture districts with farm machinery to modernize agriculture.

This has been confirmed by the Municipal Agriculture Director, Kassim Salifu, on the sidelines of the 62nd Consultative Committee Meeting of the Irrigation Company of Upper Region (ICOUR) in Navrongo on Thursday, September 13, 2025.

He revealed that the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Assembly, the Builsa South District, the Bongo District, and the Garu District are among the four districts in the Upper East Region.

“The government is going to establish farmer services centres, and in the Upper East Region, four pilot areas have been chosen, and out of the four, I am proud to say that we have been fortunate to be one.  So as of yesterday, a team from Accra came and assessed, and just from now, we will see very good works on that programme.” Salifu stated.

Salifu noted that a team from the national capital visited the municipality on Wednesday, November 12, to undertake feasibility studies for the location of the farmer center, and were pleased with the allocation made by the assembly.

“We went around and assessed some possible areas where the centre will be made for all the municipality farmers to benefit, and they were impressed where we went, all the parameters they needed, they got that.”

He added that the initiative will greatly benefit farmers in the municipality and increase food production in the municipality, which hosts the Tono Irrigation Scheme, one of the largest contributors to Ghana’s food security.

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson – Finance Minister

The Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, presenting the 2026 Budget, affirmed the revelation by the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Agriculture Department Director, noting that the government will establish 50 Farmer Service Centres nationwide to enhance productivity and reduce post-harvest losses.

The Minister noted the government will provide agricultural machinery for 50 agriculture districts with about 4,400 different machinery. These machineries include the following: 660 tractors, 300 tractor trailers, 200 minitractors, 200 minitractor trailers, 200 minitractor tillers, 200 minitractor cultivators, 200 minitractor ploughs, 200 minitractor harrows and 200 minitractor cutter bars.

The rest are 200 mini tractor mowers, 460 3-disc ploughs, 200 4-disc ploughs, 330 16-disc harrows, 100 1000kg mineral fertilizer spreaders, 100 4-row precision seed drills, 100 6-row precision seed drills, 100 32-row pneumatic seed drills, 300 800L boom sprayers, 50 combine harvesters, 50 maize headers for combine harvesters and 25 soy headers for combine harvesters.

Meanwhile, President Mahama, speaking recently at the sod-cutting ceremony for the Wa Big Push Project on Tuesday, November 11, said the government will launch the first 11 farmer service centres next year.
