LPG, PNC withdraw from Tamale Central By-Election
Both parties had earlier picked nomination forms to contest the seat but had not yet submitted them. The All People’s Congress (APC) and an independent candidate have also picked forms to participate in the election.
The Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) and the People’s National Convention (PNC) have withdrawn from the September 30 Tamale Central by-election following the tragic death of the area’s Member of Parliament, Alhaji Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed, in the August 6 helicopter crash.
Dr. Murtala Mohammed was among eight individuals who lost their lives when a military helicopter they were travelling in crashed in Adansi Akrofoum in the Ashanti Region.
In a statement dated September 8, 2025, the General Secretary of the LPG, Jerry Owusu Appiah, said the party’s decision was in honour of the late legislator and in the interest of political stability.
“The decision is made both in solidarity with the mourning period and in view of the current political instability in the country, which calls for unity, calm, and constructive engagement rather than heightened political contest.” the statement read.
The PNC, in a separate letter addressed to the Tamale Metropolitan Electoral Commission, announced the withdrawal of its candidate, Alidu Mohammed Nasir-Deen, from the contest.
The letter, signed by the party’s Regional Secretary, Imoro Mohammed, said the decision was based on personal reasons.
Both parties had earlier picked nomination forms to contest the seat but had not yet submitted them. The All People’s Congress (APC) and an independent candidate have also picked forms to participate in the election.
Meanwhile, the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Professor Alidu Mahama Seidu, has submitted his nomination form to the Electoral Commission to contest the by-election.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP), on August 11, announced it would not participate in the forthcoming Tamale Central parliamentary by-election.
