Navrongo: Dismissed Assembly Members call for President’s intervention following revocation of appointments
The dismissed appointees have, consequently, appealed to President John Mahama to intervene and reverse the decision, reaffirming their loyalty to the party and its core values.
A group of dismissed government appointees of the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Assembly has refuted claims of orchestrating the rejection of President Mahama’s nominee for Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Faustina Akeyom Abulu.
At a press conference held on Monday, May 5, the appointees, led by spokesperson Adoah Micheal, strongly denied the allegations, describing them as unfounded and a smear campaign intended to tarnish their reputations.
“I don’t think the decision lies only with appointees to be able to confirm a nominee. Perhaps we are only 15 and the elected members are 35, of which 20 are affiliated to NDC,” Adoah explained.
“On what basis did the party leadership conclude that we are responsible for the nominee’s rejection, particularly given that the voting was conducted in secret ballot?” The dismissed Assemblymen questioned.
He emphasized that 20 of the elected members are known affiliates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), casting doubt on the rationale behind the accusations leveled against them, especially since the vote was conducted via secret ballot.
Faustina Abulu’s nomination was rejected on Tuesday, April 29, after she secured just 14 out of 50 valid votes cast—well below the required two-thirds threshold of 35 votes for confirmation.
Since the vote, tensions within the NDC in the Navrongo Constituency have intensified, leading to the revocation of the appointments of the 15 government appointees—a decision the group calls unjust and unconstitutional.
“I think the actions of the Upper East Regional Minister and the Navrongo Municipal Coordinating Director will trigger the division of the NDC in Navrongo.”
“We view the revocation of our appointments as a breach of our constitutional rights and a divisive move that risks splitting the NDC base in Navrongo,” said Micheal, criticizing the actions of the Upper East Regional Minister and the Navrongo Municipal Coordinating Director.
The dismissed appointees have, consequently, appealed to President John Mahama to intervene and reverse the decision, reaffirming their loyalty to the party and its core values.
While distancing themselves from the MCE nominee’s rejection, the group attributed Abulu’s failure to secure support to concerns over her qualifications, alleged poor conduct, language barriers, and political interference particularly from former Member of Parliament, Sampson Tangombu Chiragia.
As the fallout continues, political opponents, especially in the New Patriotic Party in Navrongo, have warned that the growing internal rift could affect party unity and performance in future elections within the constituency.
