Navrongo: MP organizes Independence Day Essay Competition to encourage reading

The essay competition named; Navrongo Central Constituency MP's Independence Day Essay Competition (2025), is aimed at improving the reading skills and understanding of students in the area.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Navrongo, Simon Akabange Aworigo has organized an essay competition for students in Junior and Senior High Schools within the constituency.

The essay competition named; Navrongo Central Constituency MP’s Independence Day Essay Competition (2025), is aimed at improving the reading skills and understanding of students in the area.

“Independence Day is set aside to remember how we set ourselves free from the control of foreign powers and so as a sign of freedom, being able to get people to understand what goes around and being able to improve our learning and understanding and shaping the future that is brighter for our people.”

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Monday February 17, 2025, Aworigo said his intervention was part of efforts to improve literacy after worrying statistics showed a decline in the area.

“I was just going through some data, the population and housing census for 2021. And you find out that the literacy rate is half of what we should be, 52.2% which is very low. In the entire Upper East Region, you realize that it is 48% amongst males, it is even less than that in females.”

He continued that, “And so I felt that if there is anywhere, I want to start with as part of my support in the educational sector in what I promised the people of the Navrongo Central, it is good I start with improving literacy, the reading, the understanding and that leads to other areas of learning.”

The deadline for submission of entries for the competition is on the 22nd of February and the climax will be an awards ceremony to be held on the 6th of March 2025.
