NPP’s Filson Awankua describes CJ’s suspension as a dent on Ghana’s democracy

President John Dramani Mahama suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo after a prima facie case was established following three petitions for her removal submitted to the President.

Filson Awankua, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region, has criticised President John Mahama’s suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, describing it as a dent on Ghana’s democracy.

President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, suspended the Chief Justice after a prima facie case was established following three petitions for her removal submitted to the President.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on April 23, Awankua alleged that the action is a clear case of political victimisation.

“The level at which Chief Justice Torkornoo has risen to, we shouldn’t be having these political acts. It’s glaring from the petitions to the current committee set up that there are political undertones to it.” He said.

Awankua accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of hiding behind the opaque procedure for the suspension of the Chief Justice enshrined in Article 146 of the Constitution for partisan political gains.

He also claimed that the suspension is a fight against women in leadership. “His actions are a dent to our democracy, a fight against women in leadership.”

Awankua urged for a review of the constitutional clause on the procedure for the removal of the Chief Justice to ensure the independence of the judicial arm of government.
