Peter Addiyire calls for constitutional reforms to enhance judicial independence
He argues that a constitutional reform to remove the interference of the executive arm of government from the judiciary will ensure the judiciary operates freely without fear of favour.
Peter Addiyire, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chiana-Paga Constituency Organiser, is advocating for constitutional reforms in Ghana’s judicial system to reduce interference from the executive branch of government.
According to Addiyire, the current laws do not guarantee the independence of the Judiciary, especially the powers vested in the president to appoint and remove justices of the courts.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Monday May 5, he argues that a constitutional reform to remove the interference of the executive arm of government from the judiciary will ensure the judiciary operates freely without fear of favour.
He emphasised that the President’s power to appoint judges can be politicised and will eventually undermine the impartiality of the judiciary.
“I believe that the judiciary should be allowed to elect its own leaders and manage its own affairs, without interference from the executive”
“I am calling on the Constitutional Review Committee to look into this issue and make recommendations for reforms that would give the judiciary complete independence. I believe that, this would lead to fair and transparent justice in the country” He added.
Addiyire further called on President John Mahama to accept the recommendations of the constitutional review committee and ensure the amendment of the constitution.
