President Mahama dismisses Tamale Teaching Hospital CEO over alleged negligence

The decision comes amid growing public outcry over the deteriorating state of healthcare services at the Northern Region's leading referral facility.

President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed the Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), Dr. Adam Atiku, following reports of alleged negligence that reportedly led to the death of a patient at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Ward.

The decision comes amid growing public outcry over the deteriorating state of healthcare services at the Northern Region’s leading referral facility. Several essential medical equipment at TTH are reportedly non-functional, hindering effective healthcare delivery and putting patients’ lives at risk.

In response to the crisis, the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, made an unannounced visit to the hospital on Tuesday, April 22. The visit was part of a broader initiative by the government to assess and address systemic issues affecting healthcare delivery in the region.

Sources within the hospital revealed that the Minister’s visit uncovered troubling lapses in emergency care infrastructure and resource availability, further intensifying calls for leadership accountability.

The government has assured the public that a full investigation will be conducted into the incident that led to the patient’s death, and measures will be taken to prevent future occurrences.

The Tamale Teaching Hospital serves as a critical healthcare center for residents of the Northern, Upper East, Upper West, North East, and Savannah regions.
