The statement said that members are to return to work on Friday, May 23, 2025,following the Ministry of Finance’s release of a long-awaited letter authorizing the implementation of the negotiated conditions of service agreement.
Three major unions within Ghana’s public universities – the Senior Staff Association – Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of Ghana (TUAAG), and the Federation of University Senior Staff Associations of Ghana (FUSSAG), have suspended their nationwide strike action, citing significant progress in negotiations with the Government.
In a joint statement issued by the National Chairman of SSA-UoG, George Ansong, the unions announced that their members are to return to work on Friday, May 23, 2025, following the Ministry of Finance’s release of a long-awaited letter authorizing the implementation of the negotiated conditions of service agreement.
According to the statement, the effective date for the implementation of the agreement is November 1, 2024, and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has further directed all universities to commence payment immediately.
The unions extended its appreciation to the Minister of Education and Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai for their instrumental roles in brokering the agreement. They also commended the media and union members for their continuous support and solidarity throughout the industrial action.
The suspension of the strike brings relief to many public universities, which had faced administrative challenges and disruption in services due to the industrial action.
