Power outage hits upper east towns, business count losses

The prolonged blackout has taken a toll on residents and businesses, especially cold store operators who report significant losses due to spoilage of perishable goods.

Several towns in the Upper East and North East Regions, including Navrongo, Sandema, Paga, Fumbissi, Yagaba- Kubori and Chiana, have been without electricity for nearly 24 hours following a major disruption in power supply.

According to a joint statement issued by the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), the outage was caused by a damaged underground cable, which technicians are currently working to repair.

The prolonged blackout has taken a toll on residents and businesses, especially cold store operators who report significant losses due to spoilage of perishable goods.

Other small and medium-scale enterprises, including retail shops and hospitality providers, have also been affected.

Mobile phone repairers and grinding mills are also suffering the impact of the blackout.

“We are struggling to keep our goods fresh. A whole day without power is a big blow,” – said a cold store operator in Sandema, who begged anonymity.

Residents and business owners across the affected areas have called on the government to act swiftly to resolve ongoing power supply issues in the region and ensure long-term solutions to prevent future disruptions.

“I was supposed to grind my TZ flour, but since yesterday the operator keeps telling us the power has been restored. It is going to affect my mother’s food business.” another resident lamented.

Meanwhile, VRA and NEDCo have assured the public that efforts are underway to restore electricity as soon as possible. They have urged residents to remain calm as engineers work to resolve the issue.
