EOCO’s bail conditions for Chairman Wontumi unfair, deliberately punitive – Ayinbisa

Chairman Wontumi is currently under investigation by EOCO for alleged financial improprieties, though the specifics of the case have not yet been made public.

Director of communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region, Peter Ayamga Ayinbisa, has criticized the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) for what he describes as “deliberately punitive” bail conditions imposed on Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Friday, May 30, Ayinbisa alleged that the GH¢50 million bail requirement, accompanied by a condition to provide two trusted sureties backed by landed property, is a calculated move to prolong Chairman Wontumi’s detention.

“Imagine GH¢50 million worth of landed property in Accra. To even value your property, the Land Valuation Board has to assess it, take measurements, and go through a long process. All these requirements are just a deliberate ploy to keep the man in detention,” Ayinbisa argued during the interview.

Chairman Wontumi is currently under investigation by EOCO for alleged financial improprieties, though the specifics of the case have not yet been made public. His arrest and subsequent bail conditions have sparked political debate and led to protests from within his party.

Ayinbisa voiced support for the minority caucus in Parliament, who recently picketed EOCO’s premises in protest of Wontumi’s continued detention. He described the demonstration as a legitimate and lawful expression of concern over what the NPP sees as procedural injustice.

“Yes, going to court is an option,” he said, responding to critics who called for legal redress. “But using other lawful means to press home your demands is equally valid.”

The NPP Director stressed that the party is not opposed to investigations or accountability but maintained that the legal process must be fair and transparent.

“Nobody is against lawful prosecution if indeed he has committed a crime against the State. But we demand fairness. The way he was arrested, and the conditions of his bail raise serious concerns,” Ayinbisa concluded.

EOCO has yet to issue an official response to the allegations or provide additional details regarding the case against Chairman Wontumi.
