Winetoya Rural Child Foundation calls for support as inter-school debate boosts education in Mirigu

The Winetoya Rural Child Foundation, a non-profit organization based in the Mirigu community of the Kassena-Nankana West District in the Upper East Region, has successfully hosted the second edition of its inter-school debating competition.
The event, aimed at promoting education and leadership skills among rural school children, brought together six junior high schools from the Mirigu and Nabango circuits.
Participating schools included Pingo JHS, Wulungo JHS, Kumbosingo JHS, Nabango JHS, Nyongo JHS and Burden Bearers JHS.
Each school fielded a confident and enthusiastic team, all eager to showcase their knowledge, critical thinking, and public speaking skills.
Lead organizer, Adosibe Avaabuno James, explained that the initiative is the Foundation’s way of giving back to the community. He expressed optimism that the initiative would help to improve education in the community.
“This debate and our other educational support efforts are part of our contribution to youth development and community progress,” he said.
Representing the Paramount Chief of the Mirigu Traditional Area, Roland Anyedina lauded the debate’s impact on the community. He noted that education is the key to unlocking a brighter future and it was great to see such educational initiatives being held.
“This inter-school competition has raised the name of Mirigu. Others are now inspired to do the same,” he said.

Chairman of the event, Patrick Apeligiba, expressed pride in the Foundation’s progress and praised teachers for their efforts. He also urged parents to take the future of their wards seriously, by investing in their education. He thanked the organization for the initiative and urged its sustainability.
“I’m delighted to be part of this. With your support, we are nurturing future leaders who will help develop our nation,” he remarked.
Emmanuel Amiwine, speaking on behalf of the assembly members, commended Winetoya Foundation for its good work. He encouraged the students to work hard in their academic activities.
“Among you, I see future ministers, doctors, and lawyers. Study hard to achieve your dreams.”
At the end of the closely contested competition, the Nabango JHS with 148.3 points placed first, Nyongo JHS which bagged 140 points placed second, whereas Burden Bearers JHS with 137 points took the third position.
In a closing speech, the Winetoya Rural Child Foundation called for increased support from stakeholders, partners, and individuals to sustain and expand the initiative. The Foundation believes such efforts are vital in shaping the future of children in rural communities.
