Interior Minister outlines government interventions after drowning of Lawra SHS students

The Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Muntaka, has outlined measures being implemented by Upper West Regional Security Council and the Ghana Maritime Authority to prevent future tragedies following the recent drowning of seven students from Lawra Senior High School.
On June 14, 2025, seven members of the school’s cadet corps, drowned in the Black Volta River near Dikpe in the Upper West Region after attempting to cross to the Burkina Faso side of the river.
The Minister during a briefing on the floor of parliament on Wednesday, June 2, outlined key interventions targeted at preventing similar future occurrences.
“The Regional Security Council (REGSEC), through coordinated efforts with all relevant agencies, have put in place measures which include, regular sensitisation of canoe owners or operators and residents along the Black Volta Basin, sensitization of students and identifiable bodies on maritime safety.”
Mubarak added that the Ghana Maritime Authority has provided life jackets to canoe operators along the river and will intensify compliance with maritime safety measures.
“Ghana Maritime Authority providing life jackets to canoe operators along the river, the Ghana Maritime Authority to conduct regular monitoring of canoe operators to ensure safety on the river, ensure all canoes are regularly maintained and lastly provide psychosocial assistance to students of the Lawra Senior High School, especially to the three survivors.” He added.
The Minister believes that the measures outlined will help prevent any such occurrence in the future.
