NPP Organizer slams Mahama’s Supreme Court appointments as misplaced and unnecessary
Addiyire criticized President John Mahama’s recent appointment of seven new Supreme Court judges, calling the move misplaced and unnecessary.
Peter Addiyire, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Organizer for the Chiana-Paga constituency, has criticized President John Mahama’s recent appointment of seven new Supreme Court judges, calling the move misplaced and unnecessary.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Monday April 5, Addiyire questioned the logic behind the appointments, noting that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had already filled existing vacancies on the Supreme Court bench during his tenure.
“When Nana Akufo-Addo made his appointments to the Supreme Court, many, including John Mahama and the NDC, criticized him. So what has changed now that you are adding more?” he asked during the interview.
Addiyire expressed concern that in just four months of returning to power, President Mahama has already appointed seven justices to the country’s highest court. He described the development as inconsistent with the President’s previous criticisms of judicial appointments under the Akufo-Addo administration.
While acknowledging that the Constitution grants the President the authority to appoint judges to the Supreme Court, Addiyire argued that the scale and timing of these appointments raise questions about their necessity.
He further used the platform to call for a constitutional review to address what he sees as an overconcentration of power in the hands of the President, particularly regarding judicial appointments.
“I think the Constitution has given too much power to the President, which needs to be looked at. I want to appeal to the Constitution Review Committee to examine that part of the law,” Addiyire stated.
His remarks feed into a growing national debate on judicial independence and the broader balance of power within Ghana’s democratic institutions. Critics argue that excessive executive control over judicial appointments could undermine the impartiality of the judiciary.
