We’ve not received notice on 15% fare reduction – UE/R GPRTU
The Regional Chairman of the Union, Abdul Fatawu Atanga, confirmed that while they are aware of ongoing discussions between their national leadership and the Ministry of Transport, no formal directive has been issued to the regional branches.
The Upper East Chapter of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) says it has yet to receive official communication from its national executive regarding the announced 15% reduction in transport fares, expected to take effect on May 24.
The Regional Chairman of the Union, Abdul Fatawu Atanga, confirmed that while they are aware of ongoing discussions between their national leadership and the Ministry of Transport, no formal directive has been issued to the regional branches.
Atanga made these remarks during an interview on Mike FM’s major news bulletin, News Beat, on Tuesday May 20, 2025.
“It is true that reduction of lorry fare by 15% has been discussed with our leadership and the Minister of Transport, but we have not received any letter to confirm that. If we receive it from our national, we will do it,” Atanga said.
He further stated that while the regional chapter is ready to comply with directives from the national office, the government must also consider reducing the cost of other essential services and materials affecting the transport industry.
“We are appealing to the government to look at the other side of things. It is not only fuel that is moving vehicles on the road. They should reduce the price of spare parts, insurance, and renewal of licenses,” he added.
Meanwhile, some commuters in Navrongo have welcomed the announced reduction in fares. They urged transport operators to comply with the directive and called on the government to make such fare adjustments sustainable to curb frequent increases.
