Women Must Be Given Space in Governance – Dorcas Zoogah Urges

Zoogah has urged deliberate efforts to empower women and create opportunities for them to serve in leadership roles at all levels of governance.

Dorcas Zoogah, Chairperson of the Upper East Regional Chapter of the Young Urban Women Movement (YUWM), has made a strong case for increased women’s participation in governance, stressing that inclusive leadership is vital for equitable development.

Speaking during an interview on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Wednesday May 7, Zoogah called for deliberate efforts to empower women and create opportunities for them to serve in leadership roles at all levels of governance.

“Women should be given the opportunity to serve, so they can become voices for other women. When women are part of decision-making processes, policies are more inclusive and responsive to the needs of all,” she said.

Zoogah noted that despite ongoing advocacy, women remain underrepresented in political and public offices, especially in the northern regions. She believes bridging this gap is essential to addressing the unique challenges faced by women and girls, including access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.

The Young Urban Women Movement has been at the forefront of championing gender equality, leadership development, and social justice among young women in Ghana. Under Zoogah’s leadership, the Upper East Regional Chapter has intensified its efforts to promote civic engagement and gender-responsive governance.

She also called on political leaders and government institutions to implement affirmative policies that support female representation.
