In a statement issued on Monday, August 11, 2025, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP disclosed that the decision not to contest the by-election was taken during a National Steering Committee meeting, in line with Article 10(10)(1) of the party's constitution.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will not field a candidate in the upcoming Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election, following the untimely death of the area’s Member of Parliament, Alhaji Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed.

Dr. Murtala Mohammed tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, along with several others. His passing has left the Tamale Central seat vacant, prompting the need for a by-election in accordance with Ghana’s electoral laws.

In a statement issued on Monday, August 11, 2025, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP disclosed that the decision not to contest the by-election was taken during a National Steering Committee meeting, in line with Article 10(10)(1) of the party’s constitution.

Describing the current moment as one of national mourning and reflection, the NPP said it would be “inhumane and unconscionable” to engage in a potentially divisive electoral process while the country is still grieving the loss of the late MP and other victims of the crash.

The party further noted that by-elections are often characterized by heightened political tension and acrimony, which it believes would be inappropriate given the national mood.
