NDC’s Abuga says NPP Amnesty move is a sign of a “sinking party”
Abuga argued that the initiative fails to address the party’s deep-rooted challenges.
Benjamin Biadana Abuga, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team for the Navrongo Central Constituency, has described the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to grant amnesty to suspended members and former members as a desperate attempt to salvage what he calls the party’s ‘sinking state’.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Monday, August 18, Abuga argued that the initiative fails to address the party’s deep-rooted challenges.
“It is obvious that the NPP is dealing with a cancerous wound with a massage and what will simply happen is that they will end up actually amputating the affected part.” he said.
“They know what their problems are and they are not ready to face them. They are pretending that these are the ways to go about rebuilding their party.”
Abuga maintained that the amnesty only exposes the state of the NPP, which, according to him, is struggling to hold itself together.
“It shows clearly that the party is sinking and is doomed, so they are thinking of how they can win some membership back,” he stressed.
He further criticized the NPP leadership for neglecting the concerns of their grassroots members, which he described as one of the party’s biggest challenges.
“You don’t listen to your grassroots. The grassroots are telling you that the leadership didn’t do things right. You forced people against their interest to choose some people they didn’t want. They are saying most of the people in the lead are not doing things right—let’s change them.” Abuga said.
According to him, the NPP’s survival depends on restructuring from the base rather than superficial measures.
“Come back to the grassroots, solve all the problems at the base, build from the base to the top, but you will not listen.” He added.
