Structural plan for Navrongo will enhance fire service response – Municipal Fire Commander

DOII Atanga said the plan will help regulate the construction of buildings and improve accessibility, enabling the Fire Service to respond to emergencies without obstruction.

The Kassena Nankana Municipal Fire Commander, DOII Maxwell Atanga, has welcomed the initiative by the Kassena Nankana Municipal Assembly to develop a structural plan for selected communities in the municipality, describing it as a step that will boost the effectiveness of the Ghana National Fire Service.

Speaking to Mike FM after a stakeholder sensitization engagement organized by the Assembly’s Physical Planning Department, DOII Atanga said the plan will help regulate the construction of buildings and improve accessibility, enabling the Fire Service to respond to emergencies without obstruction.

“I see the move as a decision that will be helpful to us as an organization. You know very well how structures are erected all over Navrongo. If you look at the main market and the satellite markets, accessibility is a serious challenge. Anytime we are called to attend to an emergency, we sometimes find it difficult to reach the affected areas.” He noted.

He praised the inclusion of landlords, chiefs, and other community leaders in the engagement, stressing that their involvement will be critical in addressing the problem of unauthorized structures.

“One takeaway from this program is the fact that most of the traditional authorities and community leaders are present. This will definitely help change the narrative of unplanned development in the municipality.”

DOII Atanga further explained that the Ghana National Fire Service has shifted focus from solely firefighting to fire prevention and called on the public to cooperate with the service to prevent outbreaks and safeguard lives.

The stakeholder engagement which took place on Wednesday, August 20 at the Kassena Nankana Municipal Assembly, brought together chiefs, landlords, assembly members, and other community leaders from the Navrongo Central and Pungu Zonal Councils.
