Alleged corruption case against Ofori-Atta a repeat of history – NDC Communicator
Abubakar linked the current developments to what he described as a historical pattern involving the Ofori-Atta family.
The Deputy Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Navrongo Central Constituency, Alhassan Suwaidu Abubakar, has described the alleged corruption and mismanagement charges levelled against former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as a repetition of history.
Abubakar made the remarks in reaction to the Attorney General’s announcement that an extradition request has been sent to the United States for Ken Ofori-Atta and an alleged accomplice, Ernest Akore, in connection with ongoing investigations.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Friday, December 19, Abubakar linked the current developments to what he described as a historical pattern involving the Ofori-Atta family.
According to him, Ken Ofori-Atta’s father, Jonas Ofori-Atta, served as Finance Minister in the 1970s during the administration of former President Edward Akufo-Addo. He claimed that the economic challenges and indebtedness of that era contributed to the overthrow of the government, after which Jonas Ofori-Atta reportedly left the country.
“History has it that Ken Ofori-Atta’s father once served as Finance Minister when President Akufo-Addo’s father was President of the Republic. The country became heavily indebted during that period, leading to the overthrow of the government, and he later fled the country. What we are seeing now is a repeat of that history,” Abubakar alleged.
He further argued that the former Finance Minister’s reported reluctance to return to Ghana to face the investigations, and the Attorney General’s decision to pursue extradition, only reinforces public suspicion surrounding the allegations.
Abubakar also criticised Ofori-Atta’s reported move to engage lawyers to contest the extradition process, stating that it suggests an unwillingness to return home and account for his stewardship before the courts.
