CHRAJ urges citizens to report human rights violations for assistance

The Kassena Nankana Municipal Director of CHRAJ, Abdul Gafaru, emphasized the need for citizens to seek help rather than suffer in silence when their rights are abused.

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has urged citizens, particularly the vulnerable, to report any violations of their rights to the Commission for redress and legal assistance.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Thursday, November 13, the Kassena Nankana Municipal Director of CHRAJ, Abdul Gafaru, emphasized the need for citizens to seek help rather than suffer in silence when their rights are abused.

“People sit with their cases and die silently because they don’t know where to go, this is part of our effort to engage the public and let them know that they should not sit on their problems. Even in rural areas, if you don’t know where to go, ask your community leaders and you will be directed”

“Maybe you’re a widow and your late husband’s family has confiscated the land you depend on to care for your children, please come to CHRAJ, and we will assist in any way possible.”

Gafaru explained that CHRAJ works to bridge the justice gap by referring cases beyond its mandate to relevant institutions for further support.

“If someone is asked to go to court but cannot afford legal representation, should we sit and watch society become divided? The justice gap exists, but it is not too late. When you come to CHRAJ, we will assist you. Even if we cannot help directly, we will refer you to the Legal Aid Commission or other agencies that provide free legal assistance to the poor and needy.” He stated.

He further stressed that CHRAJ’s services are completely free of charge, encouraging citizens to take full advantage of the Commission’s support mechanisms.

“Our services are free. CHRAJ does not charge a pesewa for carrying out its investigative duties. Once you walk into our office with a complaint that falls within our mandate, we are duty-bound to commence investigations immediately. All we require is the relevant information about the case and the alleged violator to begin our work.” He explained.

Gafaru concluded by calling on the public to report all forms of rights violations to the nearest CHRAJ office for prompt assistance.
