The Kassena-Nankana West District Assembly has held its 69th Independence Day parade as part of nationwide celebrations marking Ghana’s political independence.
The parade, organised at the Paga Town Park on March 6, 2026, was held under the national theme, “Building Prosperity, Inspiring Hope.”
A total of 10 primary schools, 10 junior high schools, and two senior high schools, as well as various community groups including market women, hairdressers, dressmakers, the two major political parties the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress and members of the Ghana National Pensioners Association took part in the colourful parade.

Delivering the keynote address, the District Chief Executive for Kassena-Nankana West, Stephen Aeke Akurugo, said the celebration of Ghana’s Independence reminds Ghanaians of their shared history and the need to remain united in building the nation.
“Independence Day celebrations are traditionally marked with parades, cultural displays, march-pasts, patriotic songs, and various activities that bring us together as a people. These celebrations remind us of our shared history, unity, and the aspirations we hold for the future of our country.” He said.

Speaking on the theme for this year’s celebration, Akurugo said building prosperity requires hard work, discipline, innovation, and unity of purpose. He urged residents of the district to collectively support government initiatives targeted at developing the district and the nation at large.
“This theme is very timely and relevant as it calls on all of us, government, institutions, communities, and individuals to work together to strengthen our economy, improve livelihoods, and restore confidence in the future of our nation.” He said.

He also admonished students to take their academic work seriously and warned them against social vices, stressing that they represent the future of the country.
“My dear students and pupils, you represent the future of this great nation. The destiny of Ghana lies in your hands. I encourage you to take your studies seriously, respect your teachers and parents, and remain disciplined in all that you do.” He said.
“You must also stay away from negative influences and social vices that can derail your ambitions and destroy your future. Instead, focus on developing your talents, building strong character, and contributing positively to society.” He advised.

The District Director of Education for the Kassena-Nankana West Education Directorate, Mary Magdalene Wompakea, called for collective action to improve education in the district, saying each classroom block in the district represents a factory for building prosperity.
“The most important factory in the Kassena-Nankana West District is the classroom. In every school block across the district, from Sirigu through Paga to Nakong, we are building prosperity, one lesson at a time.” She said.
The Education Directorate provided certificates of recognition and basic learning materials for the top three performing schools at all levels of education who participated in the march-past.

The Directorate also received a donation of 140 textbooks from philanthropist Wenawome Duriyem Aborah to be distributed to ten underserved schools in the district.
