Government’s 50% slash in nurses’ school fees a deception – NPP Secretary
Kwalase argued that the policy falls short of the NDC’s campaign promise ahead of the 2024 general elections.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Constituency Secretary for Chiana-Paga, Thomas Kwalase, has criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s decision to reduce Nursing and Allied Health students’ fees by 50 percent, describing it as a deception of the Ghanaian people.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Monday, September 8, Kwalase argued that the policy falls short of the NDC’s campaign promise ahead of the 2024 general elections.
“You are talking about a 50 percent slash; was that what you promised? You promised no academic fees for all first-year tertiary institutions. Today, are you saying the Nursing Training Colleges are not tertiary institutions? They have succeeded in deceiving Ghanaians.” he said.
Kwalase acknowledged that fully absorbing the cost of training might pose a challenge for the government but insisted that honesty was crucial.
“I wouldn’t say they must necessarily make it free as promised, but I would want the NDC to be truthful and sincere with Ghanaians, that yes, we promised to make it free, but having assumed the reins of government, it is not all that possible,” he stressed.
The NPP constituency secretary further urged government to go beyond subsidising fees and prioritise securing financial clearance to employ trained nurses and allied health professionals who remain at home without jobs.
