Youth urged to harness social media responsibly in the growing digital age
Awedana described social media as a powerful tool that has broadened his worldview and enhanced personal growth.
Elliot Awedana Akunaa, a communications practitioner, has called on young people to make the best use of social media while being mindful of its dangers and addictive tendencies.
Speaking on Voices of Change on Mike FM on Saturday, September 6, 2025, Awedana described social media as a powerful tool that has broadened his worldview and enhanced personal growth.
“I have been to over fifty countries in real-time in my imagination. Without social media, it would have been impossible because my imagination would have been so limited.” He said.
Awedana noted that social media is an avenue for networking, learning, and advancing worthwhile causes, emphasising how platforms like Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook have become spaces to showcase cultural and traditional heritage.
He, however, cautioned against the negative effects of excessive use. According to him, the addictive nature of social media contributes to procrastination, shorter attention spans, and declining social skills.
He therefore urged the youth to adopt responsible online habits, limiting screen time, avoiding mindless scrolling, and engaging in alternative activities such as reading and meditation.
“Social media can make and unmake you. It is a goldmine, and like any other mine, if it is not handled responsibly, it could endanger the user.” Awedana warned.
