Youth advocate warns against excessive social media use, calls for discipline
Kansake explained how he built meaningful networks online, connected with people of shared interests, and pursued academic growth.
Emmanuel Kansake, a youth advocate in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality, has encouraged young people to explore the educational and cultural opportunities that social media offers.
Sharing his experience on Voices of Change, a weekly program on Mike FM on Saturday September 6, 2025, Kansake explained how he built meaningful networks online, connected with people of shared interests, and pursued academic growth.
“It would have been very cumbersome to do without social media. There is a whole course I learnt online. I even learnt coding on YouTube.” He revealed.
Kansake further noted that social media is a platform for preserving cultural heritage. He said platforms like TikTok and Instagram have allowed users to share cultural practices and traditions with a global audience, creating a rich archive for future generations.
Despite its benefits, Kansake also highlighted the downsides of excessive use. He explained that constant notifications and digital distractions affect concentration, reduce academic performance, and weaken interpersonal relationships.
He advised young people to use social media with discipline, avoid oversharing, and be cautious about how they interact online.
“Be mindful of how you comment, like, and share information because your whole life could be tracked through social media, leading to loss of opportunities and relationships.”
