Mental health advocate links rise in depression to financial struggles and relationship breakdowns

Abem explained that economic hardship remains a significant factor fueling mental health issues in many parts of the world.

Kelvin Abem, a mental health advocate, has identified poverty and relationship challenges as major contributors to the rising cases of depression, particularly among young people and those living in underdeveloped communities.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Tuesday July 29, Abem explained that economic hardship remains a significant factor fueling mental health issues in many parts of the world.

“Poverty is one of the factors that causes depression. For instance, you wake up and don’t know where your next meal is coming from. You may have enough for one week but not for the next, especially when you have three or four children to take care of. That creates anxiety and can lead to depression.” he said.

Abem noted that while adults often experience depression due to social and economic pressures, young people between the ages of 18 and 30 are more likely to be affected by relationship-related issues.

“For the youth, relationship problems are a major cause of depression. If you visit mental health institutions, you’ll find many young people there, often because they’ve been rejected or disappointed by their partners.” He added.

He also expressed concern over how some individuals deal with mental health challenges, warning against the use of harmful coping mechanisms such as alcohol, drug abuse, and other risky behaviors.

“Someone may have graduated from school and tried everything to find a job but keeps failing. That person may fall into depression and turn to alcohol, smoking, or other harmful habits. Instead, we encourage anyone going through such struggles to seek medical or psychological help.” Abem advised.

He called for increased awareness about mental health and urged society to create a more supportive environment for individuals dealing with emotional and psychological difficulties.
