A senior Community Health Nurse, Elizabeth Ayariga, has called on men to take an active role in family planning by accompanying their partners to health facilities to access services, stressing that joint decision-making leads to healthier family outcomes.
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Tuesday, January 13, Ayariga emphasized that men play a critical role in family planning decisions and should not leave women to seek services alone.
“Men matter in these decisions. It is important for husbands to go with their wives so it does not appear that the woman made the choice alone. We encourage men to always accompany their partners when accessing family planning services.” She said.
She underscored the importance of open communication at the family level, noting that discussions between partners should precede any decision to use family planning services.
“When you want to access family planning services, you have to sit as a family and discuss with your partner to choose the best option. Both partners should agree before going to the health facility.”
Addressing concerns about confidentiality, the community health nurse assured the public that privacy is strictly maintained at health facilities.
“We have spaces purposely designated for family planning. Clients are not made to sit in the open. We engage them one-on-one so they can freely express themselves. Privacy is fully assured.” She added.
Her comments come amid ongoing efforts by health authorities to increase male involvement in reproductive health and promote informed, shared decision-making among couples.
