President Mahama assures Upper East Region of a new sports stadium
He explained that government is working to deliver the projects at a reduced cost by adopting efficient construction models.
President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the Upper East Region will soon benefit from the construction of a new sports stadium, to be funded under the government’s Big Push initiative.
The President made the disclosure during the Presidential Media Encounter held at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, September 10, in response to a question from A1 Radio’s Joshua Asaah on the absence of a befitting sports facility in the region.
“We promised to build stadia in all the new regions and the regions that don’t have modern stadia. As I speak, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation is doing the design and costing for the new stadia, and Upper East is one of the regions that has been captured to receive a new sports stadium,” President Mahama stated.
He explained that government is working to deliver the projects at a reduced cost by adopting efficient construction models.
“Takwa Goldfields built a standard sports stadium for their football activities, and I was surprised to learn that it cost about $13 million, while governments of Ghana built stadia that cost hundreds of millions. So if they could build it for $13 million, the government too, should be able to do the same.” He noted.
The President added that the architects and designers behind the Tarkwa facility are being engaged to replicate similar stadia in regions without standard sports infrastructure.
