Seven confirmed rabies cases recorded in dogs in the Kassena Nankana Municipality

The Kassena Nankana Municipality has recorded seven confirmed cases of rabies in dogs between June and September 2025, raising concerns about public health and safety.
Municipal Veterinary Officer, Ida Atayoko, disclosed the figures in an interview on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Thursday, October 2. She explained that the cases were detected after samples from suspected dogs were sent for laboratory testing.
“From July 1st to September 31st, we tested about nine dogs suspected to be carrying the virus. Out of the nine samples, seven were confirmed positive. Within the same period, over 58 persons reported to health facilities after being exposed to rabies-related cases.” She said.
Madam Atayoko expressed worry over the situation and urged residents to prioritize vaccinating their pets to help curb the spread of the disease. She warned that failure to do so could increase the risk of human exposure to the deadly virus.

She further highlighted the global burden of rabies, describing it as a major health threat.
“When you look at global statistics, about 70,000 people die annually from rabies, mostly in Africa and Asia. Every day, 144 people die from the disease, and more than 50 percent of them are children under 18 years, largely because cases are not reported early.” She stated.
The Veterinary Officer appealed to the public to promptly report suspected cases of rabies to the nearest health facility to prevent fatalities.
