Upper East GJA to launch “Her Headline Project” to empower female journalists
the Chairman expressed concern over the low number of women being recognized at the annual event, describing it as a reflection of systemic gender inequalities in the media industry.
The Upper East Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Albert Sore has announced plans by the Association to launch a special initiative dubbed the “Her Headline Project” aimed at empowering female journalists in the region to produce more impactful stories and compete fairly for professional recognition.
Speaking at the 4th Upper East GJA Awards held at the Blue-Sky Hotel in Bolgatanga on October 10, the Chairman expressed concern over the low number of women being recognized at the annual event, describing it as a reflection of systemic gender inequalities in the media industry.
“You will see from the awards tonight that the number of women receiving awards will be far less than the number of men. This is primarily because the number of women in the association is smaller and because societal structures often make it difficult for women to have equal opportunities.” He said.
He noted that many women in the association face challenges in accessing training opportunities and participating in field assignments that produce groundbreaking stories.
To address this, the Her Headline Project will provide targeted capacity-building and mentorship programs for women journalists in the Upper East Region.
“When I was campaigning to be elected as Regional Chairman, I made a promise to bridge this gap. The GJA should be setting the example when it comes to gender equality issues,” he stated. We will need the support of everyone here tonight to make this project a reality.” He appealed.
The Chairman also hinted at plans to organized a public forum on indiscipline and insecurity in second-cycle institutions, a concern he said was shared by many parents in the region. The forum, he explained, will bring together stakeholders to discuss solutions to the growing trend of student misconduct and its impact on education.
The 4th Upper East GJA Awards, held under the theme “Upholding Public Trust: The Role of the Media in Promoting Accountable Governance in the Upper East Region,” celebrated journalistic excellence and honored 13 outstanding reporters from across the region.
The event had support from WaterAid Ghana under the Sexual Health and Reproductive Education (SHARE) project, Paga Youth Movement, Cardinal Namdini Mining Company Ltd, Kacstone Records, Ghana Shippers’ Authority, and Rural Initiatives for Self-Empowerment (RISE) Ghana.
The others were MTN Ghana, Endswell Pharmacy, Development Research and Advocacy Center (DRAC), Earl
International Group Gold Ghana Ltd, Physioshop Production Center (PPC) Paga, Widows and Orphans Movement
(WOM), and Ghana Hotels Association – Upper East Region Branch.
The rest were Adonai Sports Management, UK; Ghana Tourism Authority; Atiamah Catering Services; Blue Sky Hotel; Bolga Technical University; ICOUR; and Mozak Multimedia Services.
