The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on President John Dramani Mahama to immediately declare a state of emergency over what they describe as the worsening illegal mining, also known as galamsey crisis in the country.
In a statement issued on Monday November 10, 2025 and signed by the National Youth Organizer, Salam Mustapha, sighted by Mike FM, the group expressed grave concern about what it described as a new height of audacity and impunity demonstrated by galamsey operators.
According to the Youth Wing, recent incidents involving the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) boss, Prof. Nana Ama Klutse, and her team who were reportedly attacked and forced to flee for their lives by armed illegal miners highlight the growing threat to national security.
“Mr. President, if you have ever needed a definite reason to declare a state of emergency to quell the growing danger, then you have it now. There has never been such bold audacity shown by these galamseyers as this particular action.” The statement said.
They warned that the illegal miners appear to be more heavily armed than the country’s security services, calling the situation a national security emergency that cannot be treated as business as usual.
It further urged the National Security Secretariat to take decisive steps to neutralize the armed groups responsible for the attacks, stressing that the continued loss of lives and environmental destruction poses a direct threat to Ghana’s stability.
The statement lamented the increasing toll galamsey activities have taken on innocent lives, families, and the environment.
“The threat to national security cannot be overemphasized; this is how guerrilla wars begin,” the Youth Wing warned, referencing global examples of state failure linked to illegal armed operations.
The NPP Youth Wing also called on the President to dismiss Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in areas where illegal mining persists, accusing them of complicity and inaction.
“Either they have failed or they are tacitly involved and have approval from top echelons.” The statement reads.
